New Women's Boot Camp Offered in South Austin

Austin Boxing Babes and Yama-Kan Kajukenbo School Join Forces to Teach Women How to Kick and Punch

Austin, Feb. 13, 2009 – Julia Feighner's women's boxing program, Austin Boxing Babes, and Master Instructor Tony Morel's kickboxing classes are designed to get participants into shape while teaching the basics of fighting and self-defense. Although these programs welcome members at every fitness level, some women may not be ready to dive feet (or fists) first into these cardio-intensive classes. Feighner and Morel are teaming up to offer a spring boot camp for women who want help getting into shape before joining their regular training programs. The spring boot camp will be located at the Yama-Kan Kajukenbo School at 3401-A S. Lamar Blvd.

Beginning March 23 and running for eight weeks, the boot camp will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 7 a.m. and 12 to 1 p.m. Feighner and Morel will offer students an intensive, full-body workout that combines Morel's extensive experience in designing calorie-burning and strength-building workouts --with real-world self-defense applications -- with Feighner's technical boxing expertise and her experience in training women.

"The beginner's boot camp is designed for women who have been hesitant about joining a kickboxing or boxing exercise program because they feel too out of shape," Feighner said. "The boot camp will start at the very beginning. Group size will be small so that we can modify the exercises to meet the participants' needs and so that we can give a lot of one-on-one attention."

Because of the early morning or lunchtime slots, the boot camp is perfect for busy professionals or stay-at-home moms who are looking for a program that doesn't involve a Stairmaster, boring stationary bikes or “sweating to the oldies." Although Morel's philosophy is “train hard, remain strong," both he and Feighner know that for any fitness program to succeed, it needs to be fun! And, as Morel tells his students, "If you smile and breathe, whatever you are working on will become so much easier." Boxing and kickboxing are great ways to let out tons of stress and aggression. The instructors will teach the basic kicks (front, side, roundhouse) and punches (jab, cross, hooks, uppercuts.)

"Once women feel and hear their punches effortlessly landing on a heavy bag with nice, crisp thuds, they are hooked," Feighner said.

About Austin Boxing Babes

Julia Feighner has trained in boxing and kickboxing since 1996. She trained and taught under amateur and professional boxing and kickboxing coaches in the United States and her native Germany. As an amateur fighter, Feighner was undefeated. In autumn 2007, she created Austin Boxing Babes, which offers beginner and advanced boxing training for women, without the high-testosterone environment found at traditional boxing gyms. Because the program focuses on proper technique and drills used by competitive boxers, women learn basic fighting skills. Training includes jumping rope, shadow-boxing, punching the heavy bag and speed bag, partner drills, calisthenics, weight training and stretching. Austin Boxing Babes operates out of the Yama-Kan Kajukenbo School. For more information, visit www.austinboxingbabes.com.
